Structural Engineers awarded Major American Concrete Institute Prize

The 2013 American Concrete Institute's (ACI) "Chester Paul Siess Award for Excellence in Structural Research"has been awarded for research in the School of Engineering. Former students Jason Barrington and David Dickson carried out the work for their undergraduate thesis projects in Civil and Environmental Engineering, together with their supervisors Prof. Luke Bisby and Dr Tim Stratford. Jason and Luke received the award from ACI President Jim White during the ACI's Spring Convention in Minneapolis.

The award was made for their experimental work examiningcarbon fibre reinforced strengthening for rectangular columns, and the creation of a new model for design. This technique allows bridge and building columns to be retrofitted withoutmajor disruption to users. The work is reported in the paper “Strain Development and Hoop Efficiency in FRP-Confined Square Columns”, ACI SP-275, March 2011
