Date:

Thursday, June 29, 2023 - 17:30 to 20:00

You are cordially invited to a lecture that will examine the growing significance of Systems Engineering in industry, and how Scottish universities are looking to enhance the experience of their Engineering graduates by embedding Systems Engineering into the curriculum.

Rethinking Engineering: How visiting professors are supporting Scottish universities to develop a systems-led curriculum to meet the needs of industry

Speakers

  • Tim Kerby
  • Colin Cunningham
  • David McNaught

Abstract

Within the UK, the need for Systems Engineering is growing. The complexity of products continues to increase, and more robust ways to develop them are required to manage safety and security needs. Many technology companies are looking to apply Systems Thinking and Systems Engineering to their innovation and product development flow in this environment.

The increasing need brings with it a new challenge. The demand for Systems Engineers has increased substantially, particularly those with experience outside the traditional aerospace, defence, and automotive industries. In many cases, the Systems Engineering skills needed by industry are lightweight and pragmatic and should be part of the toolkit of all engineers. Three leading Scottish universities are working to embed Systems Engineering into their curriculum to develop these skills in future engineers.

With support from the Royal Academy of Engineering, the speakers work with Heriot-Watt University, The University of Strathclyde, and The University of Edinburgh as visiting professors on their undergraduate engineering courses. This lecture will discuss how these universities are adopting Systems Engineering and restructuring their courses to be more systems focussed. Learnings from across the scheme and feedback from industry on how the work addresses their needs, will be shared.

The approaches used at each university to introduce Systems Engineering will be examined, including introductory lectures, design projects, industrial collaboration, and course redesign. It will be shown that this has left a lasting legacy, including broader adoption within the universities and better equipping students for their future careers.

The lecture will be followed by a drinks reception.
