The successful appointee will become part of a team of specialist technical officers, academics and researchers working on the provision of remote laboratories for the online teaching of practical work in STEM subjects. The remote laboratories currently comprise over 100 experiments that are hosted in the foyers of buildings around campus. Students access them through a web browser and interact with them directly in real-time using a custom cloud-based system that we have built in-house and released as open-source software. The post-holder will lead the co-development of new experiments with internal and external clients, lead educational research to evaluate their impact on learning, and manage the provision of our services. The team is led by Prof. Timothy Drysdale, Director of Strategic Digital Education, and recently won the international award for Digital Transformation from the Association for Learning Technology/Jisc. Your skills and attributes for success:

  • A PhD degree completed or near completion, equivalent qualification or experience in a relevant engineering or scientific field
  • Experience of conducting educational research including quantitative and qualitative methods
  • Experience of developing responsive, interactive web interfaces
  • Experience of analysing and presenting data using code-based tools
  • Excellent technical problem-solving skills
  • Experience of communicating complex written and oral information clearly
  • Experience of working both independently and/or collaboratively with others
