Full job description

We are looking for a Research Associate for this 2-year post to investigate the multiscale simulations of rarefied gas flows in industrial problems. This is part of a £1.2M EPSRC-funded joint research project between Edinburgh University, Glasgow University, and Warwick University, and industrial companies ASML (Netherlands), Waters Co (UK) and Nokia Bell Labs (Ireland/US).

The Opportunity

The principal objectives of this project are:

  • To develop a multiscale simulation framework using the popular direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) software SPARTA or dsmcFoam, new CFD solvers in OpenFOAM and a new machine learning approach to efficiently model low-speed rarefied gas flows in 3D complex geometries;
  • To test and validate the new multiscale simulation approach on relevant processes in industry, such as photolithography of processor chips, electro spray ionisation mass spectrometry and evaporative cooling membranes
  • To use the new software to aid in the design of these problems

Your skills and attributes for success:

  • PhD in mechanical engineering, physics, applied mathematics or closely related fields;
  • Background in rarefied gas dynamics and/or kinetic theory;
  • Skills in running and developing DSMC software (SPARTA, dsmcFoam) on HPCs;
  • Fluency in code development and programming (e.g. C++)
