Research Associate in Reverse Electro-Dialysis

A 30 month, fixed term postdoctoral appointment is available in the School of Engineering at the University of Edinburgh to work on the “REDAEM: Anion-Exchange Membranes for Reverse Electrodialysis” EPSRC funded collaborative project.

The objective of the project is to develop membrane and engineering to create a UK Reverse Electrodialysis (RED) system. The project is a collaboration with Prof. Varcoe’s group at the University of Surrey. Several membranes and system models will be developed. One of the objective is the detailed evaluation of the true potential of RED in relation to the UK's energy mix. The RED cell performance data will also be compared to single ion-transport data (experimental and modelling).

The membrane materials developed by the University of Surrey will be characterised in the presence and absence of electrical fields. Single membrane/cell data will be compared to stack measurements. To correctly interpret the experimental data and obtain the fundamental properties of the materials to be used for the prediction of the stack performance, a detailed model based on the Maxwell-Stefan theory will be developed. These results will provide the basis for the system modelling that aims at mapping the site-specific potential for RED in the UK. Dr Maria-Chiara Ferrari will supervise the research programme.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the experimental characterisation of the membranes, the modelling activities including the transport in a single membrane using the Maxwell-Stefan theory and to the system level modelling.

The successful candidate for this position should have a PhD in Chemical Engineering or other relevant field and have experience in liquid phase membrane processes, both experimental and modelling. Experience in electrochemical processes is desirable.

The post is expected to start in October 2019 and is full time. Candidates invited for interview will be informed no later than two working weeks after the close of applications.

Salary: £33,199 - £39,609 per annum.
