Staff success at the Teaching Awards

The Teaching Awards, run by Edinburgh University’s Students’ Association, offer students an opportunity to thank staff for their contributions, whilst celebrating teaching and support at the University of Edinburgh. 

Sabbatical Officers’ Special Recognition Award: Professor Tom Bruce 

Professor Bruce was awarded the Sabbatical Officers’ Special Recognition Award, having received 173 nominations celebrating his teaching, innovation, course organisation, exceptional feedback, student support, and as a brilliant personal tutor. He was described as “the kindest and friendliest member of staff” and “someone who so clearly cares for their students and their work”. 

His nominators reported that Tom’s teaching features an inclusive learning environment where complex concepts become accessible to all. His students felt that they were always able to ask for help and that he takes time to understand the unique challenges faced by students from different backgrounds, and to provide tailored support to help them feel part of our community, both academically and socially. 

Teacher of the Year: Dr Harvey Huang 

Dr Huang was awarded Teacher of the Year (College of Science and Engineering). He was praised for his passion and dedication to their learning through seminars and holistic support through after-class sessions, including holding a weekly surgery hour after his seminar.  

Support Staff of the Year: Matt Vickers 

Careers Consultant Matt Vickers, who supported students at both the School of Engineering and the School of Mathematics, was awarded Support Staff of the Year. His nominations praised the careers support he offered, whether from his investment in reading CVs to helping prepare for interviews and breaking down industry expectations and offering advice.
