Taking quantitative measurements of metabolic process in living cells is a very challenging endeavour. Existing techniques often require the destruction of the sample, or run a significant risk of perturbing cell behaviour. This project seeks to develop novel, minimally perturbing, assays of cell function. We shall explore the use of label-free approaches for optical spectroscopy and imaging of cells and tissues. The delivery of these tools is motivated by the needs of the synthetic biology research community at Edinburgh but will also impact across the life sciences.
