Fire Service Research and Training Trust Scholarship
Fire adapts to its environment. When a fire becomes established in a compartment within a building or structure, the fire behaviour depends upon the nature of the fuel, the airflow dynamics in the space and the heat exchange between the fire and its environment. When fire-fighters enter the fire environment, they typically change the airflow dynamics and introduce water sprays according to their standard operational guidance. Such interventions will always change the fire behaviour, but may not always change it in beneficial or even expected ways.
This project will examine the range of tactics and technologies dictated in the existing operational guidance documents, and explore the changes in the fire dynamics for a range of different fire scenarios. The aim is to better understand the effects that various tactics will have on fire dynamics, to enable tactical decisions to be made in practice as to which technique is appropriate for any given fire scenario.
The project is funded by the Fire Service Research and Training Trust (FSRTT) and regular interactions with the trust and the UK fire services will be essential during the project.
The project will involve a detailed analysis of compartment fire behaviour using some laboratory scale experiments, computer fire modelling of the scenarios, and possibly some larger scale fire exercises in collaboration with the fire services.

Minimum entry qualification - an Honours degree at 2:1 or above (or International equivalent) in a relevant science or engineering discipline, possibly supported by an MSc Degree. Further information on English language requirements for EU/Overseas applicants.
