Dr Chris Ness named Oldroyd Early Career Awardee

The Deputy Head of School has been recognised by the European Society of Rheology (ESR).

Dr Chris Ness

Chemical engineer Dr Chris Ness has received the 2027 Oldroyd Early Career Award for his contributions to the rheology and physics of dense suspensions.

The Award is bestowed by the ESR every year to a young prominent rheologist who has distinguished themself in research, practice, or service to rheology.

Anke Lindner, President of the European Society of Rheology, said,

Dr Christopher Ness has made pivotal contributions to understanding the rheology of colloidal and granular suspensions. His seminal work has significantly advanced the understanding of the origin of thickening in dense suspensions, the mechanisms for tuning the thickening in such suspensions, and the range of behaviours accessible in viscosity metamaterials.

Dr Chris Ness added,

I am delighted that my work and the work of my students and collaborators has been recognised in this way and I look forward to continuing to push forward rheology research in Edinburgh.

In commemoration of the scientific achievements of pioneer of rheology, James Gardner Oldroyd, the European Society of Rheology introduced the Oldroyd Early Career Award in 2023. This recognises outstanding, early-career achievements in the field of rheology and for commitments to the rheological community.
