LightFusion: Integrated underwater Imaging, localisation and information exchange

Research Theme

Sensor Signal Processing

Autonomous Sensing Platforms

Aim

Light Fusion: Exploring techniques to achieve underwater imaging with 3D time-of-flight (ToF) sensor and use same optical signal for localisation and data exchange between the transmitter and the target. The project will explore integration with complementary acoustic underwater communication for robustness.

Objectives

  1. To study and understand the current underwater optical imaging techniques
  2. Develop a simulation model for 3D ToF imaging in underwater taking into account the intrinsic optical properties of the underwater environment
  3. Set-up a small scale, in-lab experiment to validate the simulation above
  4. Investigate techniques combine the ToF imaging with optical wireless communications
  5. Investigate the complementary properties of acoustic waves and optical signal propagation in water with the view to developing a hybrid system that combines sensing/imaging with wireless data transfer in the underwater channel.

Description

To explore and investigate techniques to achieve integrated ranging, imaging and wireless communication in underwater using optical radiation in the blue/green window.

Reflected light from ToF sensor to measure channel state information, and 3D-imaging. Imaging/sensing to identify target prior to communication/data exchange, ML/AI for optimisation of imaging, PHY layer, channel mitigation, error correction etc. Integration with underwater acoustics for robustness.
