A ceilidh is a traditional Scottish social gathering that involves a lot of group dancing and it’s a good chance to learn about Scottish culture. This ceilidh experience was so fun and it was a great opportunity to make new friends from other parts of the University’s community. The dancing is actually really easy to pick up and everyone is very friendly so you end up making lots of dancing friends. Although I didn’t have any experience of ceilidh dancing I still enjoyed the night.
There’s no experience required to join, an experienced caller would tell us what to do and the dances are fairly easy, quick to learn and great fun! With step by step instructions, anyone could join in and have fun from the moment you step into the room. No one cares if you’re not perfect and there’s no pressure to join in either but be prepared to work up a sweat. We also had a fantastic eilidh band ready to dance us through the night. The band was made up of three players, playing fiddles, drums and electric guitars. And the songs are cheery and lively to get everyone up in the mood to dance.
The weather is gloomy outside, and dancing is the best way to cheer up! It will be a great group event, especially for anyone who hasn’t been to a ceilidh before, and a very friendly atmosphere. I fully recommend an evening of ceilidh dancing. If you want to join a ceilidh night in Edinburgh, you can grab a mate and book tickets at Summer Hall where will always hold a ceilidh night.
