Geobag (sand-filled geotextile bags) are a cheap and sustainable method of river bank reinforcement in poor areas; they can be sourced locally and placed manually. This project, funded by a joint University of Edinburgh-Heriot Watt University scholarship scheme, builds on previous work[3-8] which used an experimental and coupled CFD-DEM numerical approach to simulate incipient failure of revetments. The work is now being extended with the aim of producing guidelines for the safe design of revetments, which are often constructed manually by local farmers, with little engineering input.
