Student Profile - PK 2024 Cohort

PK talks about the benefits of studying towards a PhD.

What is your PhD about and why does it matter to you?

My work focuses on algorithms for image interpretation. I am developing algorithms to improve image classification and recognition. Current methods involve neural networks, but these have limitations. I'm interested in how machines recognize specific images and how to eliminate biases to enhance image recognition. This is important for manufacturing, as it can improve accuracy, verifiability and trust. I'm working on an algorithm that not only recognizes images but also helps understand the reasons behind this recognition to avoid data misinterpretation.Personally, I enjoy studying AI as it resembles applied philosophy, raising interesting questions like, "What does it mean to be intelligent?" and "What does it mean to know or recognize something?". The philosophical application, such as introducing an algorithm for regret or reward in random environments and observing its impact on AI performance, particularly interests me.

What is your background?

I have an MEng in Robotics from Heriot-Watt University. The program included software and electrical engineering, but I developed an interest in algorithms. I originally considered Computer Science but preferred the interdisciplinarity of the Robotics program.

How would you describe your program of study to a prospective student? What is the most interesting thing about this program?

The program is designed for those interested in the defence sector but also includes opportunities to work with companies outside this domain. It offers a great chance to interact with industry, not only in defence but across various sectors. It’s an intensive program that combines taught and research elements, but it has been a very rewarding experience.

How did you find your first year and the taught element?

It has been quite involved and hard work. I've learned that good time management is crucial for maintaining balance and meeting deadlines. The Institute for Academic Development (IAD) courses were helpful and reassuring, but you need to find your own way of managing your workload. The cohort has been great; having others to discuss things with and a sense of community has been really supportive for me.

What’s something that has surprised you about your experience so far?

I initially thought a PhD was all about publishing papers and conducting research, but I've found it to be also about self-discovery and understanding how I work. I'm constantly discovering new ways of doing things and gaining new perspectives. I've had to learn to change my approach to certain problems and accept that sometimes I need to adjust my mindset. It’s been challenging but very rewarding.

Any tips for those interested in this PhD?

If you’re looking for an integrated course, this program allows you to explore different topics alongside research. A PhD is excellent for personal development and deepening your knowledge in specific areas, but this program also provides insights into working with industry.
