This website, brought to you jointly buy the School of Engineering and the Careers Service, aims to give you information and starting points to help you think about your future and become more employable. In short: careers information tailored for engineers! It can be hard knowing where to start in thinking about your future and even feel overwhelming.  To make things easier and more manageable, the Careers Service has developed the Careers Compass to help you navigate your way through the process.

Introducing the Careers Compass

The Careers Compass is designed to help from whatever point you are starting.  Whether you are in your first or final year, focussed or unsure, it can guide you with suggestions of what to do and when.  It can help you review what you've done, explore your options, plan next steps and chart progress along the way. It's designed to help you take small steps  throughout your time at university. It provides a structured framework to help you find information relating to your career questions. Everything we offer is clearly linked to the Careers Compass so you can see where you are developing, identify possible gaps and plan your year ahead. It has five key elements so that you can build:

    • Awareness of what you want, what you are good at and where to develop further
  • Discover What's Out There
    • Awareness of possible options, different sectors, employers and ways of working
  • Build Experience
    • Different types of experience where you develop valuable skills and personal qualities
  • Become Professional
    • Confidence in understanding what it takes to succeed in the things that matter to you
  • Make it Happen
    • Confidence in knowing how to find and create opportunities, make informed decisions and do successful applications
