Industrial Advisory Board
Part of the link Civil and Environmental Engineering has with industry is the Industrial Advisory Board. The board is made up of practising engineers from industry in the annual curriculum review process. The board is currently comprised of senior representatives from AECOM, Arup, Atom Consultants, Costain/ABC Electrification, David Narro Assoc., Galliford Try, Jacobs, Mouchel, Peter Brett Associates, Ramboll, Scottish Water, and Wardell Armstrong. They specifically advise and review on:
- Strategy in both teaching and research
- Academic content of courses
- Strategy for recruitment of undergraduate and postgraduate students
- Promotion and marketing Civil and Environmental Engineering to schools, industry, professional bodies and the wider community.
Industrial Mentoring
Our historic industrial mentoring scheme has now be relaunched in partnership with the student society CivSoc and runs in conjunction with their Academic Families scheme (which links undergraduate students across all years). The mentors are drawn from a range of organisation types, many also associated with the discipline via our active Industrial Advisory Board.
Field Trips and Site Visits
All students go on a field trip in their second year to carry out surveying exercises and reinforce the understanding gained in lectures. It also gives everyone the chance to work with and socialise with fellow classmates and academic staff.
Team-building and team-working skills are highly important in engineering, and are achieved by hard work during the day, with some well-earned relaxation later on! Students participating in the field course all agree that the week-long trip is one of the highlights of their degree programme.
Students also undertake a variety of site visits throughout their programmes. These are to live building sites and civil & environmental engineering facilities such as water treatment plants and landfill/recycling sites.
Industrial placements
Our students are encouraged to undertake industrial placements in engineering companies. In conjunction with our Careers service we assist students in finding appropriate placements and we run an Edinburgh Award to enhance and recognise key Graduate Attributes for employability.
Industrial Placements in Civil and Environmental Engineering.
