Civil and Environmental Engineering

Civil and Environmental Engineering at the School of Engineering

Shashank Kumar, a recently graduated Mechanical Engineering student, undertook the Sustainable Building Engineering [SBE] workshop at ESITC Caen, France that is only open to students that have completed three years of higher education. It was a tailored mix of lectures (medium of teaching is english); tutored group sessions and independent group work over a period of 4 weeks from Monday 30th May to Friday 24th June 2016. The choices of lectures were background dependent and delivered from high-level international companies.  The workshops were comprised of project teams composed of students from several different European civil engineering schools working on a group project that was assessed by three project reviews.

2018 will mark the 150th anniversary of the Regius Chair of Engineering, thus establishing engineering studies at the University of Edinburgh on a par with the best in the UK. The School of Engineering will be marking this significant anniversary with a programme of events and activities. Planning has begun, and we also want to receive ideas and suggestions from our community of staff, students and alumni – or indeed anyone with a great idea!

Fluid dynamics plays an essential role in our everyday life. You might think of our blood flow, on hot summer days the air-conditioning system, the potable water network, or stirring our coffee in the mornings to enhance the mixing process and the heat transfer.

This winning entry to the Excellence in Structural Engineering Education Award describes how the University of Edinburgh has put creative design at the heart of its civil engineering degree programmes.

Congratulations to Dr Tim Stratford, Senior Lecturer in the Civil Engineering discipline and Head of the Engineering Graduate School, who received The Institution of Structural Engineers (the IStructE’s) Excellence in Structural Engineering Education Award on 8th June 2016 for innovations in teaching design as part of our Civil & Environmental Engineering degrees.

Hyped are proud to announce they have been awarded funds from Innovation Initiative Grant, as well as a cash award, providing a modest, but comfortable budget to continue their research, development and testing. The group are keen to welcome new people and fresh ideas from mechanical, electrical and civil engineering as well as those who would be keen to help with outreach and marketing.
