Title: Reducing Unbalanced Magnetic Pull through Active Control
Abstract:
From statistical records, bearing failures is one of the main failures for renewable energy generator. The Unbalanced Magnetic Pull (UMP) is the main contributing factor in bearing wear which leads to bearing failure. If the generator has a symmetrical air gap, the radial forces around the generator cancel out each other to give a zero net radial force. However, rotor eccentricity will occur due to manufacturing tolerance or bearing wear. This unsymmetrical air gap will then produce the UMP. A flux control strategy is introduced to reduce the UMP of an eccentric machine. Although the UMP could not be reduced to zero, it can definitely prolong the bearing lifetime.
