Title: An Introduction to the MaREI Centre / Bioenergy Research

Abstract

Prof. Murphy is Director of the MaREI centre, which is the Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) centre for Marine and Renewable Energy in Ireland. Research funding in this centre is of the order of €55M and includes 6 Universities, 200 researchers and 48 industries.

The MaREI centre is hosted by University College Cork (UCC) and is headquartered at the new Beaufort Building (housing the National Ocean Test Facility) in Ringaskiddy, Co. Cork. Partner universities in the centre include the University of Limerick, NUI Galway, Maynooth University, University College Dublin and Cork Institute of Technology, with over 25 academic collaborators (Principal Investigators, Funded Investigators and Official Collaborators).

Biography

Professor Jerry D Murphy is Chair of Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering in University College Cork. He also serves as Vice Director of the Environmental Research Institute (ERI) which is the flagship institute in Environmental Research in UCC including 300 academic researchers.

Jerry serves in the International Energy Agency (IEA) Bioenergy as leader of Task 37 "Energy from Biogas". Jerry has served as the IEA Bioenergy Country Representative for Ireland for Task 39 Liquid Biofuels (2007 - 2009) and IEA Task 37 Energy from Biogas (2010 - present). He is an editor of the IEA Bioenergy commissioned book: "The Biogas Handbook: Science, Production and Applications" and has authored numerous other IEA Bioenergy publications.
