Abstract: Vernacular architecture is an architectural style that is designed based on local needs, availability of construction materials and reflecting local traditions. It tends to evolve over time to reflect the environmental, cultural, technological, economic and historical context in which it exists. Nowadays, with more appreciation on the benefit of vernacular architecture in sustainable material use and disaster resilience, many contemporary buildings adopt traditional vernacular architectural elements. Bohol Island, located in the centre of Philippines, is the only Global Geopark of the country but is vulnerable to cyclone and seismic hazards. This seminar will introduce the various vernacular architecture in Bohol Island, their contemporary applications, local government’s policy, and structural resilience to natural hazards.

Speaker: Ar. German Janus Nino S. Guidaben is the Principal Architect of Gworks Architectural Services in Tagbilaran, the Philippines. He became a licensed Architect since 2009 and worked as a lecturer in Bohol Island Statement University during 2011-2014. As a Principal Architect since 2010, he worked closely with the Provincial Government of Bohol in heritage conservation, vernacular architecture and community development. Guidaben was the President of United Architects of the Philippines (Bohol Chapter) in 2017-20, President of International City/County Management Association in 2020-21, and Heritage Committee Head in Bohol Arts, Culture, Heritage Council in 2022. His architectural design has won many awards, including the prestigious HALIGI NG DANGAL National Award for Architecture in 2021 and People’s Choice Awards in 2022.
