The Opportunity

The University of Edinburgh is recruiting a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Energy Market Integration for Grid-Scale Storage. The successful candidate will contribute to the EPSRC project “Data-Driven Exploration of the Carbon Emissions Impact of Grid Energy Storage Deployment and Dispatch”. They will be responsible for original research, focusing on the challenge of reducing carbon emissions by optimally placing and operating grid-scale energy storage, considering energy market dynamics, balancing requirements, network constraints, uncertainty, and the characteristics of different storage technologies. This will involve the application of methods from stochastic optimisation, power systems modelling and market design.

The project will build upon a high-fidelity model of Great Britain’s transmission network and balancing market developed by Dr Morstyn’s research group. Simulations will be completed using Edinburgh’s high-performance computing facilities. Experience with local energy markets and blockchain technology will be considered a plus, as this will create synergies with the group’s other projects. The project will also involve collaboration with academic partners at the University of Oxford and Imperial College London, and with industry partners at National Grid, Pivot Power and Open Climate Fix.

Your essential skills and attributes for success:

  • Hold a relevant PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Economics, or similar area (or be near to completion).
  • Demonstrable research experience with control systems, operations research, and/or market design.
  • Demonstrable programming experience, preferably with Python.
  • Clear track record of appropriate high-quality published work.
  • Ability to work independently, with a high degree of initiative and flexibility.
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to write for publication, present research proposals, and represent the group at meetings.
