Bio-engineer Joins Elite Academy

Dr Adam A. Stokes from the Scottish Microelectronics Centre has been appointed to the Royal Society of Edinburgh’s Young Academy of Scotland.

The engineer, who specialises in bio-inspired engineering, robotics, microfluidics, metamaterials, and micro and nano fabrication, is one of 43 new members of the young academy (YAS). Dr Stokes’s appointment recognises that his work meets the YAS mission of tackling the most challenging issues facing society in Scotland and beyond.
Applications to the young academy were reviewed by RSE Fellows and YAS members, who hope the new cohort will bring a range of skills from across Scotland to the membership. Candidates were selected on evidence of their interdisciplinary work as well as their commitment to contributing to the public good.

Dr Stokes joined the University of Edinburgh in 2012 as a Lecturer in the Institute for Micro and Nano Systems and the Institute for Bioengineering. He is Director of the University’s FabLab, and Programme Director for the MSc in Bioelectronics and Biosensors, in addition to his teaching duties.
Dr Stokes’s research interests include robotics, physical chemistry, electrical engineering, materials science, nanotechnology, optics, proteomics, and cell biology.

The YAS was established by the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 2011. Its work is carried out by 10 working groups, which new members have the opportunity to join. Dr Stokes said: “It is an honour to be accepted into the Young Academy of Scotland and I'm very proud to have been appointed. I look forward to working with other YAS members and making a contribution to the overall impact of the Academy in meeting some of society’s grand challenges.”
Professor Alan Alexander, General Secretary of the RSE, added “The YAS brings together the finest young minds and talents in Scotland. On behalf of the RSE, I congratulate the new members on their appointment and I look forward to working with them and to admiring their progress.”
Neil McLennan, YAS co-chair, commented, “I am hugely excited to welcome new members from such diverse and varied backgrounds that will bring their knowledge and expertise to assist in widening YAS’s impact.”
