Professor Thompson elected a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (FIEEE) and Listed as a Highly Rated Scientist by Thomson-Reuters

Prof. John Thompson has been elevated in January 2016 to the position of Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineer (FIEEE), the leading international organisation in the field, for research contributions to multiple antenna and multi-hop wireless communications.

According to the IEEE web site "the IEEE Grade of Fellow is conferred by the Board of Directors upon a person with an extraordinary record of accomplishments in any of the IEEE fields of interest". The award to John is also notable because it was based on the quality of his research output alone. Each year elevation to FIEEE status is restricted to only 0.1% of the IEEE membership.

At the same time, Thomson-Reuters has listed Prof. Thompson as a top 100 highly rated scientist in his field (http://highlycited.com/). This is based on citations of his research publications during the period 2003-2013.
