Dr Carvel 'runner up' in the EUSA Teaching Awards for 'Best Course'

Congratulations to Dr Ricky Carvel, lecturer in Combustion and Fire Dynamics, who was runner up in the 'Best Course' category for his "Fire Science and Fire Dynamics" class at the EUSA Teaching Awards 2017/18, on Thursday 26th April.

The Students' Association Teaching Awards Ceremony recognises the teachers, personal tutors, students who tutor, research supervisors, and support staff who made an enormous positive impact on students' learning experiences at Edinburgh University. This year there were over 1,600 nominations for over 780 staff members. The winners were announced at a ceremony on 26th April at Teviot Row House.

Dr Carvel was nominated because he "developed the basic of fire science and then helped us to analyze the critical situations. He created a great interest in the subject. And even he forced us to think as much and got us out of our knowledge barrier and pushed us to think further. I am fortunate to do his class. His course evaluation is perfect and the way he designed the course is perfect for someone to know almost every aspects of the course."

Fire Science and Fire Dynamics is an optional course for Civil, Mechanical and Chemical engineering undergraduate students in their final years. It is also taken by postgraduate students on the "Structural and Fire Safety Engineering" MSc, the "Advanced Chemical Engineering" MSc, and the "International Master of Science in Fire Safety Engineering" MSc.
