Congratulations to the following students who recently won Royal Academy of Engineering Leaders Scholarships!
- Terry Hutley, fourth year MEng Chemical Engineering
- Sophia Koni, fourth year MEng Chemical Engineering
- Maks Kozarzewski, fourth year MEng Mechanical Engineering
- Elvis Lepardinas, third year BEng Mechanical Engineering
The competitive scholarships support undergraduates who can demonstrate the potential to become leaders in engineering and role models for future engineers.
All Scholars receive £5,000 to be used over three years towards career personal development activities. We asked the recipients how the plan to use the opportunity.
Sophia Koni
"How will we feed 10 billion people by 2050? How do we tackle climate change? Surprisingly, both questions have the same answer: agriculture technology and urban farming. With so many more mouths to feed, the existing methods of agriculture will be incapable of responding. This combined with water shortages, unstable climate, and a decrease in farmland, is a recipe for global starvation. Agriculture necessitates a revolution and I aspire to be part of it. The scholarship will fund my attendance in conferences, allow me to carry out company visits, and fund summer internships at start-ups that are unable to fund a project for an internee. Lastly, the scholarship will fulfil my aspiration to complete a summer volunteering program with ‘Engineers Without Borders UK’ in Africa.”
Maks Kozarzewski
“The scholarship is certainly a great opportunity to make the most of the coming years and a perfect platform to meet other students from around the UK, as well as experts in their fields. As I’m going into fourth year, with the industrial placement being just around the corner, I’m definitely looking forward to delving into the industry and making use of everything I’ve learnt over the past years at the University and by working on student projects.”
Elvis Lepardinas
"Although the pandemic forced me to turn my plans upside down, I still hope to use the scholarship on summer schools in the UK or the US to deepen my knowledge about project management next year. I believe that 'soft skills' such as effective communication or team management are often overlooked and taking these courses will help me expand these skillsets. Besides, the RAEng Scholarship provides access to a broad network of engineers in the UK and beyond which is also an incredible opportunity to get to know and find like-minded people!”
