Alumna Sam Bryant is Rising Star of Women in Fire Safety

Our recent graduate Sam Bryant (MEng Hons Structural and Fire Safety Engineering, 2020) has been named Rising Star at the Women in Fire Safety Awards 2021.

Sam is currently Graduate Fire Engineer at OFR Consultants in Edinburgh, a role she began in September 2020 after completing her Masters at Edinburgh earlier that year.

During her final two years in the School of Engineering, Sam completed her Masters thesis on fire safety during construction while working part-time as Trainee Site Manager on a construction site.

Speaking about her current role, Sam explained, “I get to work on design fire strategies on residential and office buildings, and have been working with the research team on some recent projects. I’m even going to get the opportunity to continue what I started looking at in my thesis over the next couple of years which is really exciting.”

Sam is no stranger to awards – having also recently won the Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE)’s Up and Coming Fire Engineer of 2021.

Reacting to her success at the Women in Fire Safety Awards, Sam said, “I was so pleased when my manager told me she was nominating me for it back in September, it felt like a win for me at that moment! When I was told I’d won, I was so shocked! It took a couple of days for it to sink in, but it meant so much to me to be recognised for my hard work and enthusiasm for my career.

“During my first 12 months working I suffered a lot from imposter syndrome, which I think is completely natural, but winning this award has really helped cement that I belong here, and I really feel like the world is open to me at the moment and I’m capable of anything.”
