Student society Edinburgh University Formula Student (EUFS) sped to success for a seventh year running at the Formula Student UK competition.
EUFS used advanced AI skills to leverage vision models for detecting the track around the autonomously driving vehicle and a neural network for cone colour allocation, then deployed on edge computing devices to achieve a real-time inference.
The team won overall six prizes across various categories, including an overall award for FS-AI Simulation Development, FS-AI in FS-AI Skid Pad; FS-AI Sprint; FS-AI Trackdrive; Babcock FS-AI Overall Dynamic Events; and FS-AI Class Overall.
The event organised by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) was held at Silverstone Racetrack and welcomed students from over 100 universities across the world to compete in various race car challenges to encourage enterprising and innovation within engineering.
The competition offers students an opportunity to apply engineering knowledge to tangible scenarios while developing valuable skills across project, finance management and business planning. The prestigious competition is acknowledged by industry as a testing ground for engineering stars of the future, transitioning them from university to the workplace.
EUFS is the University of Edinburgh’s student society devoted to automotive technologies. Based in the School of Engineering with a large and diverse membership of over 130 students from 11 different schools across the University, the group works throughout the year to design, assemble and test Formula One-style race cars, alongside a driverless vehicle and artificial intelligence (AI) software, to compete at the Formula Student Event.
Edinburgh University Formula Student president, Sandor Felber, commented:
“EUFS's incredibly dedicated team has once again pushed the boundaries of autonomous driving technology! By elevating the robustness of our fully self-driving software to tackle this year's adverse driving conditions and hardware modifications we have successfully defended our title as the leading FS-AI team for the seventh consecutive year at FSUK 2024! The six trophies we are bringing home this year are a testament to EUFS's sustained laser-sharp focus on technical development which would not have been possible without the University and our industrial sponsors.”
Head of School, Professor Gareth Harrison, added:
“I’m delighted to see our Formula Student team extend their winning streak at the FSUK competition. EUFS performance in FS-AI category demonstrates the commitment, talent and innovation in a vibrant and multidisciplinary team enabling them to retain FS-AI Class Overall winner award year after year. We and our partner Schools are proud to support our students.”
