Abstract:
Radiotherapy is a highly effective and widespread treatment for cancer, which an estimated 25% of the UK population will receive at some point in their lives. Nowadays X-ray imaging plays a crucial role in radiotherapy for the planning, adaptation and delivery of a precise treatment, but the image quality of the devices used has been lacking. During my PhD in IDCOM from 2014-2018, we developed algorithms for closing this technology gap, to unlock more complex and beneficial treatments by improving the image quality of the X-ray CT systems. Industry took a keen interest in our work, and I have been working at Elekta, a leading radiotherapy device manufacturer, since 2020, where we have directly translated work from our research at IDCOM into a product and have realised the benefits we envisioned. In this talk, I will share this journey and the things I have learnt about industrial research, IP and product development.
