Micromechanics of materials using generalised continuum models

To model micromechanical behaviours of materials, such as size effect or strain localisation, it is necessary to relax some restrictions of the classical continuum. We thus obtain generalised continua, such as the Cosserat, micromorphic, non-local or strain-gradient continua. I am interested in the development of novel finite element procedures suitable for strain-gradient models as well as on theoretical constitutive aspects of chirality in strain-gradient elasticity and energy dissipation in Cosserat plasticity. Currently, I am considering the constitutive and computational challenges of using generalised continuum models in three dimensions, especially with respect to localisation of deformation.

Constitutive and numerical modelling of geomaterials

Geomaterials, such as soils, rocks or concrete, play a major role in many Civil Engineering applications. They are granular materials (either purely frictional or cohesive-frictional) that can exhibit very complex mechanical behaviours. I am interested in the continuum mechanics constitutive and numerical modelling of geomaterials, especially concerning degradation and failure of soils and rocks.
