A PhD studentship is available in a project seeking to develop next generation 3D time-of-flight (ToF) sensors. The EPSRC-funded project will exploit the unique capabilities of single-photon avalanche diode (SPAD) detector arrays, and integrate on-chip digital processing to achieve considerably faster frame rates than existing ToF imagers. This will offer significant advantages in the fast-expanding field of 3D sensing, especially in safety-critical applications such as LIDAR for driverless vehicles.
The student will have the opportunity to contribute to different aspects of the development and testing of a new SPAD ToF sensor, depending on his/her background and interests. In addition to the design of the sensor itself, important elements will include the design of the illuminator, devising optimal illumination schemes, and interpreting the output of the sensor via appropriate signal processing. There will also be the opportunity to explore novel applications of SPAD image sensors requiring fast tracking, co-operating with researchers within and outside Edinburgh’s School of Engineering.
The project benefits from a partnership with STMicroelectronics, the world’s leading manufacturer of SPAD-based ToF modules (as found in 100’s of millions of mobile phones), as well as a close association with Prof. Henderson’s Edinburgh-based CMOS Sensors & Systems Group (winners of “Best Academic Research Team” at Image Sensors Europe 2018, and one of the pioneering groups in SPADs).
The closing date for applications is 29th July 2019, however it may close earlier if a suitable candidate is found.

Minimum entry qualification - an Honours degree at 2:1 or above (or International equivalent) in a relevant science or engineering discipline, possibly supported by an MSc Degree.
