The Scottish Microelectronics Centre (SMC), a research facility based within the School of Engineering, is helping technology companies to manufacture critical parts for use in intensive care units during the Covid-19 pandemic. The research facility is currently supporting two companies – Druck and Pyreos – to meet the demand for specialist sensors used in ICUs (intensive care units) and the wider community.
The Chemical Engineering Teaching Lab has been awarded the 2020 Silver Sustainability Award by the University’s Department for Social Responsibility & Sustainability. The award recognises the team’s effort in reducing the lab’s carbon footprint, sharing good practices, improving waste management and moving towards more sustainable and less energy-intensive approaches.
Academics from the School of Engineering are working on a new multidisciplinary project led by Edinburgh Napier University (ENU) to research and develop the next generation of hearing aids to help improve the lives of people with hearing impairment.
School technician Kevin Tierney received a long service award from University Principal Professor Peter Mathieson at a ceremony in the Playfair Library in late 2019. Kevin has worked for the University for 25 years, and is currently based within the Electrical & Electronic Engineering Technician Team.
