IBioE Seminar - Prof. Ir. Dr. Wong Yew Hoong, Universiti Malaya

Electrifying the Future through Next-Generation Nanoelectronic Materials

As the demand for high-performance, energy-efficient, and sustainable technologies intensifies, the development of next-generation electronic materials becomes increasingly critical. This presentation explores the important role of advanced electronic materials in enabling transformative innovations across diverse applications — from nano-scaled gate dielectrics and semiconductor packaging to gas sensing nanotechnologies. Drawing on over a decade of interdisciplinary research, the talk will highlight the deposition, structural and electrical properties, as well as functional integration of transition- and rare-earth metal oxides thin films tailored for modern device applications. Gas sensing nanomaterials, which harness the high surface area, tunable electrical properties, and defect-rich interfaces of nanostructured oxides to achieve enhanced sensitivity and selectivity. Notable examples include ZnSnO4 nanowires for ethanol detection and nitrogen-doped ZnO nanosheets, enabling low detection limits (as low as 20 ppm) at reduced operating temperatures. These materials are poised to transform environmental monitoring, industrial safety, and non-invasive medical diagnostics through their integration into low-power, miniaturized sensor platforms.
