Postgraduate programmes (4+1)

We have agreements in place with several overseas universities which allow you to study Engineering both at your home institution and at The University of Edinburgh.

After studying for your Bachelor degree at your home institution, you can transfer to the University of Edinburgh to undertake a taught MSc programme.

On successful completion of this degree, you will graduate with a Master of Science awarded by The University of Edinburgh. All students from partner institutions who take part in the 4+1 programme will receive a £3,000 scholarship per year of study at Edinburgh.

All students who take part in the 4+1 scheme will receive a £3,000 scholarship per year.

Minimum entry requirements are the equivalent of a UK 2:1 degree in a relevant discipline. This generally translates to a GPA of 80% or above. Students whose first language is not English must also demonstrate evidence of an English Language proficiency:

  • IELTS Academic: total 6.5, with at least 6.0 in each component (or equivalent test)
  • TOEFL-iBT: total 92, with at least 20 in each component (or equivalent test)

You will receive a Conditional Offer for your Masters programme which will be converted to an Unconditional Offer when you meet the conditions. The conditions are normally the completion of your Bachelor degree and/or meeting English language requirements.

Once you have met all our requirements, our Admissions team will make you an Unconditional Offer confirming your place to study with us.

Once you have accepted your offer and don't have any outstanding conditions to meet, you will hold what we call an Unconditional Firm offer. This is when you can apply for a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) number through your MyEd account.

Our Student Immigration Team will start working on your draft CAS and you will need to confirm that all details are correct. You will be able to start your Student Visa application with your official CAS and we advise you make a timely application.

When you apply for and pay for your visa, you will also pay a lump sum called the Immigration Health Surcharge that will cover any medical treatment you might need while in the UK through the National Health Service.

Depending on your nationality and programme of study, you may also need to apply for Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS) clearance.

This can be a lengthy process so we encourage you to apply as early as possible.
