Our history

The School of Engineering can trace its beginnings at the University of Edinburgh to 1868, when Queen Victoria appointed the first Regius Chair of Engineering at Edinburgh, the oldest such position in the UK.

In 2002 the present School of Engineering formed from the previous departments of Chemical Engineering, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Electronics and Electrical Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering.

Our deep-rooted history, combined with our intellectual curiosity, drives innovation and enhances quality of life on a local and global scale.
