Low Energy Separation Processes

  • (a) (Commenced 1994; 1997-2016 in collaboration with Dr Masaru Nakaiwa, Tsukuba and co-workers): Heat-integrated distillation.
  • (b) (Ongoing) Exploiting the properties of novel working fluid mixtures in refrigeration, airconditioning, heat pumps, heat transformers and energy storage.

Utilisation of Marine and other Renewable Energy

  • (a) Use of renewable energy in thermal processes such as desalination. (in collaboration with Prof Stephen Salter, Dr Win Rampen and co-workers).
  • (b) Optimising energy storage provision to accommodate renewable energy inputs.

Efficient and effective utilisation of biological sources of energy

Effective and efficient use of traditional bioenergy resources (fuelwood, agricultural residues, energy crops, together with their derivatives: charcoal, biogas, bioethanol etc). DfID Research Programme Consortium: Policy Innovation Systems for Clean Energy Security (PISCES) established 2007 and funded until 2013. Partnership with African Centre for Technology Studies (Nairobi); M.S.Swaminathan Research Foundation (Chennai); University of Dar es Salaam; and Practical Action Consultants (UK, Kenya and Sri Lanka).
