Power Electronics

Power electronic interfaces for renewable energy systems.

High Voltage DC Networks

As wind farms are built increasingly further offshore, interconnection to the main network via HVDC links becomes increasingly attractive. The operation of multi-terminal offshore DC networks is being investigated in collaboration with GE Energy. Studies into the design of appropriate DC/DC converters to step-up the DC voltage are also taking place. The integration of such multi-terminal offshore DC networks with the AC network is also being studied.

Rural Energy Supplies in Developing Countries

This work is part of a Research Programme Consortium supported by DFID to increase available knowledge and understanding of policy relevant trade-offs between energy, food and water security in relation to bio-energy in Africa and South Asia.
