Munawir is a PhD student at the Institute for Energy Systems, working with Prof. Vengatesan Venugopal as his Primary Supervisor, and Dr. Encarni Medina-Lopez as his Secondary Supervisor. His current research is about the coastal hydrodynamics at Montrose Bay and Montrose Tidal Inlet System, Scotland, UK. He is using numerical modelling using Delft3D-4 and Delft3D-Flexible Mesh in an attempt to understand the tidal hydrodynamics and the significance of other forcings (wave-, wind-, and density-driven currents) at Montrose Bay and further a Montrose-like inlet system.

He received his Bachelor of Science in Ocean Engineering at Institut Teknologi Bandung, Indonesia, in 2017. In 2019, he came to the University of Edinburgh to conduct his MSc by Research with Prof. Vengatesan Venugopal, sponsored by the Indonesia Endowment Fund for Education Agency (LPDP). In January 2021, he was awarded with MSc by Research 2021, and later that year, he continued to pursue a PhD degree at the University of Edinburgh under the DTP Studentship award. In August 2023, Munawir attended the 40th IAHR World Congress in Vienna, Austria and was listed as the finalist of the 15th John F. Kennedy Student Paper Competition.
