In this research theme light-emitting and light-modulating materials are developed and integrated with silicon microelectronics to form new high-performance optical systems. Examples include:
- High-resolution microdisplays from polymer organic light-emitting diodes (P-OLEDs)
- The development of ferroelectric liquid crystal over silicon (LCOS) spatial light modulators (SLMs) for holography and structured light applications
- Low-cost organic tuneable lasers from self-organising chiral liquid crystal microcavities, for displays and biomedical applications
- Liquid crystal adaptive focus lenses for optical imaging
- Digital 3D holographic display systems
- Visible light communications
