Sustainable and Digital Construction (SDC)

Our research develops engineering and digital solutions to improve the construction and operation of buildings and infrastructure and make it compatible with planetary limits. Our results also serve to inform local and national policy and have been put into practice across a wide range projects and industrial partners.

We conduct transdisciplinary research in close collaboration with industry partners, policy makers and users to better understand the factors, during the design, planning and delivery of construction as well as the operation, building performance, maintenance and end-of-life of buildings and infrastructure, with a particular focus on sustainability and digitalisation. We develop solutions (strategies, engineering and digital) to improve environmental, social and economic impacts of interventions, in particular optimal use of resources and whole-life environmental impacts. This research is conducted in the various contexts spanning from modern Passivhaus construction to the maintenance of Victorian infrastructure.

Our research is recognised internationally for its academic excellence, with hundreds of peer-reviewed publications in leading academic journals, and numerous research awards. Our impacts extend across practice, policy, new innovations, system solutions and habitat encompassing national and international reach.
