The Arkwright Scholarships Trust has made its 2012 award of Scholarships for aspiring leaders in engineering. 335 Scholarships for school students and 4 Undergraduate Scholarships were awarded – the largest ever annual number.
The UK Electronics Skills Foundation (UKESF) declared the University of Edinburgh’s Rares-Mihai Popa its 2012 Scholar of the Year in November. Rares-Mihai is a third year student reading for a combined bachelor’s degree (BEng) in Electronics and Electrical Engineering with Management.
Professor David Milne, who founded Wolfson Microelectronics while working in the Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of Edinburgh, has been awarded the Royal Society of Edinburgh Royal Medal 2012.
The device consists of car tyres lashed together to form a giant 80-100 metre ring that is filled with a buoyant material, such as foamed concrete, to support giant plastic tubes which extend 100m deep into the ocean.
