Thomas Melistas, Nikos Spyrou, Nefeli Gkouti: Benchmarking Counterfactual Image Generation

In this talk we will present our work on building a comparison framework to thoroughly benchmark counterfactual image generation methods. We integrate all models that have been used for the task at hand and expand them to novel datasets and causal graphs, demonstrating the superiority of Hierarchical VAEs across most datasets and metrics. Our published framework is implemented in a user-friendly Python package that can be extended to incorporate additional SCMs, causal methods, generative models, and datasets for the community to build on.

Inaugural Lecture of Professor Alasdair McDonald, Chair in Renewable Energy Technologies

During this pre-Halloween lecture, we’ll look at wind turbine technology, explore how those turbines work and reflect on some of the challenges faced by modern wind turbine designers. Although some of the modern turbines are monstrously large and the engineering science challenges are fiendish, we don’t need to be spooked.

Fabian P. Hagen: Carbon nanoparticles: From particle structure to macroscopic properties

Carbon nanoparticles (CNP) represent the most produced nanomaterial worldwide. CNPs are employed as functional- or electro-material, however, are also encountered in aerosols from combustion, as pollutants from fires, energy conversion processes, and internal combustion engines.

Michael Baur: Channel Estimation in Underdetermined Systems Utilizing Variational Autoencoders

In this talk, we utilize a variational autoencoder (VAE) for channel estimation (CE) in underdetermined (UD) systems. The basis of the approach forms a recently proposed concept in which a VAE is trained on channel state information (CSI) data.
